Cafe Comfort

It’s crisp on this early morning in Vancouver, and the Canada Line sky train crew has already been hard at work for hours just steps outside the doors of the Granville street cafe. I’m cold, my head is pounding and all I need is my morning fix to get this day off to a better start.

One step into Trees Organic Coffee and Roasting House and I realize I’ve stumbled upon a very special and rare find. This quaint cafe has all the makings of the safe little refuge in the big city that I’d been looking for. I’m struck by how welcoming and cozy the cafe seems in comparison to the harsh environment outside. With its rustic charm and slight bohemian feel, I’m reminded of my travels through Europe far too long ago.

My attention is turned to the incredible smell of freshly roasted coffee and home made muffins (or is it their famous cheesecake?) baking somewhere behind the scenes. I’m delightfully intoxicated by the mood and aromas in the cafe – possibly a result of being caffeine deprived, when one of the staff asks me what I’d like to order. She seems so happy and helpful, now I know I must surely be having a dream!

As I take a few sips of my warm, rich latte made with organic beans from Guatemala, I’m overwhelmed by a great sense of comfort. I take a big sigh of relief and revel in my new found cafe comfort. I could sit all day under the tree here at Trees (yes, there’s a tree inside the cafe…not a real one, I don’t think). I will most certainly be back to take in more of what Trees has to offer. But right now, I’m quite proud of myself for uncovering this little place which I’m sure must be one of Vancouver’s best kept secrets……or is it?
